2017 Trends to follow from SA Fashion Week

SA Fashion Week has increasingly become the fashion event of the year for South Africans, for people from all walks of life attending. Fashion to me is not only what I wear but its how I express myself, makes me feel good and is basically an outward cast of my personality.

With this being said - fashion week is not only for the fashion lovers but for everyone who takes a second to think to about their outfit every morning and even those who don't. While I wasn't able to attend this year - I had the hugest amount of FOMO every time the screen of my Instagram, Twitter or Facebook flashed in front of me.

Local designers came together over the course of one week to showcase their Spring / Summer 2017 Collections - and wow were we all amazed by Thebe Magugu and Gert Johan Coetzee - my personal favourites.

I had to write a blog post about this and also break down some of the key trends to look out for in the next 12 months.

TREND ONE - COLOURS

More and more we are seeing designers embracing the slightly risky, daring colour palettes. This year enters citrus orange, touches of greenery, rich burgundy and crisp denim into our casual summer closets.

TREND TWO - PATTERNS

Not only are we seeing the appearance of bright colours but gone are the days when it was taboo to wear pattern on pattern.

This year patterns stole the show - from pinstripe, clad, to hand drawn artwork. Just another reminder that fashion is what you make it and cannot be dictated to you.

TREND THREE - MAKEUP HIGHLIGHTS

Cara Delevingne eyebrows grabbed the attention of the audiences once again with the models showcasing their best graphic eyebrows which was the star of the Lufthansa 1st Class Collections and Edda Gimnes shows. Suday Times describes this "As if sketched on with a black khoki pen, the imperfect brows were matched with loosely crimped, retro-inspired hair."

Subtle - blush pink cheeks, clean and simple face makeup with popsicle stained lips stole the show. Less makeup is more these days with people and now even models opting for the natural looking skin and peachy colourful lips and spider-like eyelashes. My personal favourite look on anyone's eyelashes!

TREND FOUR - THE CLOTHES

Flirty knee length skirts, structured leather, mesh panelling and lose-fitting dresses all made a comeback for the upcoming season.

Feminine silhouettes, made possible by detail work, layering of fabrics and cross over colours, monochromatic two pieces were all brought together by showcasing designers on each show of their runways.

One thing for sure is that fashion changes everyday - with new and exciting upcoming artistic designers - we are about to walk into a whole new era which will redefine what fashion means to every person.
