A holistic approach to getting Healthier Skin

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

The focus on clearer and healthier skin has become a trendy topic during lockdown. People have been seen to be spending more time on their skincare and skin regimes. For me, however, I have always had to pay special attention to my skin, as it's always been quite problematic. Earlier this week I was invited to join a webinar with Cetaphil where the skincare brand launched their new Healthier Skin Revival: Cleanse, Moisturise and Protect campaign.

Too often with brand launches there is a huge focus put on the new products (which is a given) but very little is afforded to the audience to takeaway in terms of education around the topic and actual resonance and relevance to their life.

In this webinar, hosted bright and early on a weekday morning, we were introduced to a Registered Dietician, Yoga instructor and Dermatologist, who all offered a different approach to skincare, a holistic approach to skincare.

We learnt about how eating the right things affords better skin appearance. I have heard this many times before, "avoid sugar, reduce milk intake, drink water", and the list goes on. I am sure you have heard this too. While we all know this, when shopping for groceries, whether on a weekly or monthly basis, what do we actually need to place into our trolley's.

Monique Piderit, a Registered Dietician, offered a "Skin-Savvy Shopping list" as a compass in guiding us towards what we actually need to purchase at the grocery store that is, in fact, good for our skin. Personally, I thought this was very useful and something we all should consider along with a good skincare regime using gentle skincare products.

Monique explained several other important notes to consider when striving for better and clearer skin. Some of them are:

* Choose Low GI foods. these help with maintaining a regular blood sugar level. Foods with a high sugar content may cause early aging and sagging skin. This happens when the sugar molecules attach to the collagen which causes skin to sag and may also lead to hormonal changes that acne.

*Incorporating a good amount of fruits in your diet help to boost antioxidants. Some foods that are high in Vitamin C is oranges, strawberries, pineapple, mango, paw paw, broccoli, brussel sprouts and bell peppers. These foods stimulates collagen synthesis, associated with less dryness and noticeable less wrinkles.

*Healthy fats such as your omega fatty acids is an essential. They are natural anti-inflammatories and helps skin look more plump, and hydrated with less scaly, flaky and dull areas. It's good to note that Tuna is not a fatty fish and Olive Oil can decrease aging by 30%.

* Lastly, water and exercise. A good tip here is to drink one glass of water per 10kg you weigh. Being active promotes healthy blood circulation to the skin by increasing blood flow nourishing the skin cells with oxygen and nutrients.

Hearing about what actually works for your skin and small lifestyle adjusts to make that promotes healthier and clearer provided me with the tools needed to take better of my skin from the inside out. These lifestyle adjusts along with good and gentle skincare products are sure to produce visible improvements to your skin.

I have been using Cetaphil skincare products and sunscreens for years and swear by some of their products. These products are also dermatologically recommended, as I was also recommended going onto this range as a teenager. Here's what you need to know about the new campaign:

The New Cetaphil range

This range focuses on cleanse, moisturising and protecting your skin. According to Cetaphil: "The objective of the campaign is to demonstrate how each step (Cleanse, Moisturise and Protect) plays an essential role in an effective skincare routine and thereby leading to the revival of healthier skin. But it is important to remember that your skin’s appearance is not simply a matter of DNA; daily habits, in fact, have a big impact on what we see in the mirror. An unhealthy diet, stress as well as the environmental pollutants, and other factors can affect the condition of your skin1,3. It is therefore vital to use the correct skincare products, to ensure your skin looks youthful and revived. It is vital to determine your skin type prior to using any product on your skin. Cetaphil® takes a closer look at the basic steps of a skincare routine and what products should be considered to keep your skin healthy."

1. CLEANSE

Gone are the days when skin cleansing would mean splashing some water on your face when you wake up. Choosing the correct skin cleanser for your skin type or condition is an important step. Using a cleanser is necessary to wash to any dirt, makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells and any environmental impurities that end up on your face naturally throughout the day. For dry or sensitive skin, opt for the Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser (125ml, 250ml or 400ml) or the Cetaphil® Gentle Cleansing Bar, while those with oily or combination skin should opt for the Cetaphil® Oily Skin Cleanser (125ml or 250ml). Specific concerns such as acne-prone and eczema-prone skin require the right treatment from the time it first

appears.

To maintain the correct skincare regime of Cleanse, Moisturise and Protect for acne-prone skin, Cetaphil® recommends using a cleanser, such as the Cetaphil® Pro Acne-Prone Skin Foam Wash that removes excess oil and controls shine, cleanses without over-drying skin, incorporates zinc technology that reduces red spots, blemishes and is gentle to use on a daily basis.

For eczema-prone skin, opt for a cleanser such as the Cetaphil® Pro Eczema-Prone Skin Restoring Body Wash. This body wash, suitable for face and body has a patented Ceramide technology to improve natural moisture of the skin. It cleanses, moisturises and soothes to alleviate dryness and itching, helping improve the skin barrier6. Not only is a healthy skincare regime important for young children and adults, but a baby’s delicate skin deserves the same amount of care and nurturing. Cetaphil® Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo has been formulated to cleanse without drying, leaving your baby’s skin and hair soft and smooth with a light, fresh fragrance. It is tear free and is suitable for baby’s sensitive skin from the first bath.

2. MOISTURISE

Our skin is the body’s largest organ and requires regular attention to stay youthful, blemish-free and healthy. Moisturising after a shower is particularly important as the hot water strips all the moisture and oils out of our skin, leaving it parched and dry. It is therefore important to apply the moisturising step to your skincare regime as it hydrates the skin.

Even though everyone needs to moisturise, the texture of your moisturiser will be dependent on your skin type. Cetaphil® has a range of moisturisers, including creams, lotions, eczema-prone skin moisturiser and acne-prone skin lotion, to suit various skin types or conditions.

3. PROTECT

Sunscreen is, hands down, the most crucial skincare product to add to your daily regime. Daily and consistent use of sunscreen helps to prevent premature skin aging caused by the sun which include wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin over time. Most importantly, the use of daily sunscreen can help prevent the formation of certain skin cancers. When selecting a sunscreen, opt for one that is SPF30+ or higher and is broad spectrum (incorporates

both UVA and UVB protectors)10. Cetaphil® has a range of sun protection products for adults and children.

Healthier Skin Revival is possible with a good daily routine including each important step of: Cleansing, moisturising, and protecting. Look after your beautiful skin with the help of Cetaphil® ...you only get one!
