Celebrating 25 Years of Carnivore Restaurant

Hidden away in the mountains of West of Johannesburg, South Africa, is a restaurant that offers cuisine never before presented to customers and those brave enough to visit.

Okay, enough of the jokes. Today we’re talking about Carnivore restaurant in Muldersdrift. I had heard about this restaurant but never visited it until a few weeks ago and oh boy was I taken a back.

About Carnivore Restaurant

A cornerstone of the Recreation Africa Group, the Carnivore Johannesburg is a franchise of the iconic original Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi Kenya. The Carnivore Johannesburg has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including Best Traditional Restaurant, Best Restaurant to Take Tourists To, Restaurant of the Month and runner-up Restaurant of the Year.

Disclaimer: You will probably see from the name of the restaurant that it is made for meat eaters. There are vegetarian and fish dishes on the menu, but if you’re a vegetarian, this isn’t the place for you. If you are South African you will relate. If you’ re not from SA, this is an experience!

Firstly, South Africans love their meat and these meats are key in separating this restaurant from others. It’s an ‘eat as much as you can’ styled menu for a set price. All of the dishes are meat. There are several types of game that are served. These are not necessarily meats that form part of a stable diet in SA but rather those that you might have tasted before.

What’s on the menu?

The menu certainly forces you to indulge the greatest South African eating experience through a selection of charcoal grilled game and domestic meats, skewered on Masaai swords and cooked over an open fire.

My thoughts…

Born and bred in SA, I loved the entrance, the history, the mood of the restaurant, the décor and entertainment. The food wasn’t really my favourite, not because it was cooked badly but rather because I am not a big meat eater and hence only had the salads and chicken and of course I over indulged on the dessert, that was fabulous!

The service, waiters, and managers of the restaurant were very friendly focussed and dedicated to their tasks for the night. I rate Carnivore restaurant a solid 8/10.
